Released: Hybrid e-Manifests & EPA/RCRA Integration

In an effort to improve hazardous waste compliance and streamline the e-Manifest process, Wastebits has announced a new Hybrid e-Manifest option. This system unlocks a new level of integration with the EPA’s RCRAinfo system, providing businesses with a more efficient way to manage their hazardous waste—reducing fees required for every manifest. This can save businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars over time.

Previously, customers would need to upload a physical scan of a signed manifest, and the Wastebits team of manifest specialists would review and manually enter the data of each manifest into a digital format that the EPA accepts. Now, the data from Wastebits can be submitted directly to the EPA from within the software itself, and a paper manifest will be generated automatically if it needs to be printed, but no more scanning and uploading needs to happen since the primary documentation is now within the system itself.

This new system has the potential to save businesses time and money, as they will no longer have to enter data into the EPA’s RCRAinfo system manually. In addition, the integration with Wastebits’ software will provide businesses with real-time updates on the status of their manifests, allowing them to track their waste from pickup to disposal.

Wastebits is committed to providing businesses with the most efficient and compliant waste management software and solutions available, and the new hybrid e-Manifest option is just one more way that we are doing that.

What is the EPA e-Manifest System?

The EPA created a national system that tracks hazardous waste shipments electronically, called “e-Manifest.” This updated the nation’s process for following hazardous waste from start to finish while saving time and resources. The e-Manifest program launched on June 30, 2018.

Any hazardous waste generator who ships off-site must use the e-Manifest system, with a few exceptions. In addition, there is a fee for every e-Manifest that is submitted to the EPA. The cost of submitting an e-Manifest to the EPA ranges from $8-$20 per manifest, depending on how it is submitted. With the new hybrid submission, fees are brought down to the lower end of this range.

There are many benefits of e-Manifest, including:

  • Reduced paperwork burden for EPA, states, tribes, and the regulated community
  • Increased data quality and consistency
  • Reduced potential for transcription errors
  • Improved EPA oversight of the hazardous waste program
  • More timely and complete data for EPA decision making
  • Increased transparency into the hazardous waste management system for all stakeholders

What is Wastebits?

Wastebits is a software company that provides businesses with solutions for managing their waste processes. Wastebits’ software is designed to streamline the waste management process, making it easier for businesses to comply with EPA regulations and communicate with waste service companies to manage waste streams, approvals, manifests, and scale-house integrations.

How Does Wastebits’ New Hybrid e-Manifest System Work?

For current users of the Wastebits software, very little has changed from what is seen within the application. Most of the changes are done via the software, behind the scenes in communicating with the EPA and reflecting that communication within Wastebits.

A new dropdown option appears after creating a draft manifest that allows the user to submit to the EPA. Yes, it’s that simple!

This action sends all of the information to the EPA’s RCRAInfo system, where the EPA generates a new manifest with a tracking id. This tracking id is then sent back to Wastebits and is automatically added to the manifest information. The generator can sign the manifest via Wastebits as before, and Wastebits will send out email notifications to each party as required with a button to the place where they can sign the manifest and move the statuses along from Draft to Received at the destination facility.

What is the EPA’s RCRAInfo System?

The EPA’s RCRAinfo system is the leading hazardous waste compliance tool, and by integrating with it, Wastebits has created a solution that will make it easier for businesses to track their hazardous waste from pickup to disposal. The new hybrid e-Manifest option allows businesses to automatically transfer data from their EPA ID number and generator category, making it easier to track and manage their hazardous waste.
